In Japanese, the word 道 (dō) has rich meaning: it can mean way, path, or a way of life. It’s often used in martial arts to express not just the technique but a journey of personal growth. The second part of my header, 始まり (hajimari), simply means beginning. So together, 道の始まり (Dō no hajimari) can be understood as the beginning of the way. I've just started my way in judo.
We have three training sessions each week:
- Monday: Regular session
- Wednesday: Mat wrestling
- Thursday: Open training session, which sometimes is instructed
On Monday, I felt a bit nervous because I didn’t know anyone. My friend was supposed to start again too — he has practiced judo longer than me — but he couldn’t make it, so I went alone. I only had shorts and a technical t-shirt for the session.
After Monday and Wednesday, my body was really sore, and I realized my lifestyle definitely needs some adjustment — which reminds me of the “道” concept: judo is not just a sport, it’s a way of life that shapes your body and mind.
Wednesday’s session focused on mat wrestling. I trained with my friend who managed to come this time, and it was really fun. After the training, I felt like I had an “out of my body” experience — floating on clouds of sore muscles and adrenaline. The next day, my chest, shoulders, and even my jaws were aching. Reminder of muscles of which I didn’t even remember existing!
Thursday’s session was a bit more relaxed. There were only three of us practicing. We started with a warm-up ball game, then went through some basic techniques for example o-soto-gari, ko-uchi-gari , o-uchi-gari , and ko-soto-gake. We also practiced proper grips and balance. Starting judo has been challenging but also rewarding. I’m excited to continue this journey and explore not only the techniques but also the philosophy behind it.
Next week, I’m looking forward to having my own gi. Just the thought of wearing it makes me feel really inspired and motivated to continue my judo journey. It feels like a small but meaningful step on this path — 道 — that I’ve just begun.
